Workshop: Fashion School Rebel

Taking inspiration from the exploratory approach to fashion design synonymous with the London fashion scene, this dynamic one-day design development workshop will unleash your creative spirit to develop experimental fashion ideas in both 2D and 3D forms.

What to expect

The art colleges of the 80s and early 90s were a hotbed of creative design talent who sought to challenge the fashion hierarchy. From Margiela to McQueen, designers broke the rules by exploring the traditions of clothing with a decidedly punk viewpoint.

Morning Session: Learn the Rules

  • Define your aesthetic.

  • Creating ½ scale basic body shapes.

  • Basic principles of pattern cutting and dart manipulation.

Afternoon Session: Break the Rules

  • Concept generation and building the narrative.

  • Experimental 3D Silhouette development.

  • Design communication and sketchbook page development.

Introduction to cutting-edge designers of the late 20th century, their design methods, and their impact on the world of fashion.

PLEASE NOTE:

• The workshop includes a visit to REBEL: 30 Years of London Fashion sponsored by Alexander McQueen on the same day following the museum's opening hours.

• This workshop is open to anyone with an interest in fashion design – no experience is necessary.

• All materials for the duration of the session and light refreshments will be provided.

Facilitator

Tim O'Sullivan

O’Sullivan is a Senior Lecturer in Fashion at Ravensbourne University and specialises in Pattern Cutting and Drape. He was a fashion student in the early 90s just as Alexander McQueen and his contemporaries were exploding onto the fashion scene. He went on to become a Creative Pattern Cutter with a vast and varied output which featured in British and Italian Vogue, on the Oscars Red Carpet and on the catwalks of London, Milan and New York.
