Volunteer at the museum
Volunteers are an integral part of our team.
As a volunteer, you will contribute both to the development of museum activities as well as day-to-day operations, ensuring a warm welcome for all our visitors.
Welcomers are the first people our visitors meet on arrival at the museum. As members of the Visitor Experience team, you will greet visitors on arrival, listen to their needs, orientate them, answer questions, and help them get the most out of their day at the museum.
We're not currently recruiting new Welcomer volunteers.
Please check back at a later date.
Garden volunteers share stewardship of the garden and explore horticulture and design as catalysts for social change.
We are currently recruiting new volunteers who are local residents aged 18+ with limited or no access to green spaces at home, with a focus on immigrants, and/or people at risk of experiencing isolation.

The museum recognises that work experience is different from volunteering. The museum is currently focusing on core activities and consequently regrets it does not have the capacity to organise work experience placements, neither for groups nor individuals.
On-going roles:
The museum offers primarily roles that suit people who enjoy working with the public, speak excellent English, offer great customer service skills and can be available on a regular basis, e.g. Welcomer and Family Activity volunteers.
Fixed-term placements:
Working 1–2 days a week, fixed-term volunteers assist staff in the publishing, curatorial, exhibitions, communications or learning teams. These roles often require specific skills and experience and are useful for students and graduates interested in developing a career in museums and cultural attractions, publishing, learning or digital fields. There is no programme or set timetable for these internships and they are advertised when the museum seeks additional support.
If you have any questions about volunteering at the museum that are not found in the FAQs document, you can get in touch with a member of the Human Resources team by emailing hr@designmuseum.org.
